About ADHD

ADHD or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a condition that is characterized by inattention (not being able to keep focus), hyperactivity (excess movement that is not fitting to the setting) and impulsivity (hasty acts that occur in the moment without thought). It is the most commonly diagnosed mental disorder in children and adolescents. 1 ADHD also affects many adults with an estimated 8.4% of children and 2.5% of adults having ADHD 3, 4.

ADHD is more commonly seen in boys and men and is usually discovered at a young age when the child has difficulty in school, paying attention, or behavioral problems.

Some people with ADHD have fewer symptoms as they age, but some adults continue to have symptoms that interfere with their daily lives. In adults the main symptoms of ADHD may include difficulty paying attention, restlessness and impulsiveness.

Many adults with ADHD are not aware that the have it and just know that everyday tasks such as focusing and prioritizing can be challenging; leading to missed deadline and forgotten meetings. The inability to control impulses can display as impatience waiting in line, road-rage, mood swings or outburst of anger.

Adult ADHD symptoms may include:

  • Impulsiveness (hasty acts that occur in the moment without thought)
  • Trouble multitasking
  • Frequent mood swings
  • Disorganization and problems prioritizing
  • Excessive activity or restlessness
  • Problems following through and completing tasks
  • Low frustration or anger tolerance
  • Poor time management
  • Trouble coping with stres

Unfortunately, the cause of ADHD is not well-understood. There is research that suggests the cause of ADHD may be hereditary (passed down from family members), chemical imbalances or brain disorders. This is a condition that cannot be cured, but there are treatment plans that can be implemented to control impulses and emotions, leading to an overall better quality of life! 2

The Adult ADHD Study is evaluating an investigational drug for adults with ADHD.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Clinical research study?

A Clinical research study (also called a clinical trial) is a medical study that helps to answer important questions about an investigational drug or device, such as: Does it work, or how effective is it compared to another drug/device?

All medications must be tested in clinical research studies before they can be approved by regulatory authorities for doctors to prescribe to patients. Without people taking part in these studies, we would have no new treatments. The volunteers who participate in clinical research studies play a major role in helping to advance medicine.

The ADHD Studies will include various visits to a study clinic in your area and follow up phone calls at designated times.

All study-related care is provided at no cost to you. You do not need health insurance to participate.

Volunteers who take part in the study may receive compensation for their time and travel.
